Painting

I loved painting these two and working them as a pair at the same time was wonderful too. I painted them on the same day, ensuring that the brushes, paints and palette I used were mostly the same. I pretty much stuck to the same palette that I have used and will continue to use throughout this class.

I really struggled with the first Coral Sister, but I eventually do find my way. It took hours of work and many layers to finally find the direction with which I was happy. In the end, I loved her eyes and mouth very much, and she served as a sweet springboard for me to get started on my second Coral Sister. It allowed me to work swiftly because I knew where I was heading. I love how each one is unique in their own right but yet still so connected, like real sisters. I love how the “older” sister is being so dramatic and the “younger” one a little timid and shy, but together making a beautiful emotive fit.

varnish time

It is time to varnish and seal off your clay works. I use a matt varnish spray. I find it mutes down any shine and the high intensity of some brands. I love this finish.

  1. Allow your clay to be thoroughly dry first before spraying.

  2. Spray in a well ventilated room and with a mask on.

  3. Leave your varnished piece to dry thoroughly before moving.

Please use with caution and exercise extreme care.
